Aeroplan

Program overview

Aeroplan is the Air Canada frequent flyer program and one of the most popular Star Alliance programs in the US. It partners with all credit card programs except Citi (Chase partnership is expected to go live in 2021) and this is how most US consumers use the program. The program employs dynamic pricing for Air Canada operated flights, so the best uses of the program are for partner airlines redemptions as they still use an award chart.

Point/Miles Conversion Chart

Pros

  • Aeroplan family sharing
  • Good availability for Star Alliance, flexible terms
  • No fuel surcharges after a recent change. Now more miles but less money; positive on balance
  • Possible to mix Star Alliance partners with non-alliance partners
  • Allows stopovers for round trip itineraries
  • Good website and Canada-nice customer service
  • Award tickets can be cancelled online

Cons

  • CAD 39.00 partner booking fee
  • Stopovers cost 5,000 points each
  • In most cases Aeroplan needs to be called for changing award tickets
  • Long holds for phone support

Excellent for

  • Short flights within the US for 6,000 miles in Economy.
  • Flights from the US to Europe for 60,000 miles in Business Class and 35,000 miles in Economy.
  • Etihad Airways flights to Middle East from the US for 85,000 miles in Business Class or for 120,000 in First.

Insider Tip

  • Award reservations for infants are free for domestic and transborder travel within the US or Canada and cost just CAD$25 ($19) or 2,500 points for all other itineraries.
  • The holds are typically long and they disconnect you after an hour of unanswered hold. It is best to call early in the morning and choose French even if you don’t “parler Français.” We have heard reports that using this method may allow you to contact a representative much faster. Since they are based in Canada, all representatives speak English as well.
  • Program works best for partner airlines with distance based charts.  No great deals with Air Canada operated flights with dynamic pricing.
