Main Frequent Flyers Programs ANA Mileage Club

ANA Mileage Club

Program overview

ANA Mileage Club is the frequent flyer program for ANA, one of the two major airlines in Japan. Since ANA is a member of the Star Alliance,  you can use miles to book tickets on all Star Alliance partners. ANA Mileage Club may offer one of the best ways to redeem your American Express points for round trip Star Alliance awards in terms of number of points, but the 48 hour transfer time and redemption restrictions limit the appeal.

Point/Miles Conversion Chart

Pros

  • Family account
  • Round the world tickets up to 20 flight segments
  • Some of the lowest rates for round trip redemptions in premium classes
  • One of the rare programs that allow waitlist of award space

Cons

  • Fuel surcharges are added to some partner flights
  • Booking one-way awards is not possible
  • Booking for others is limited to spouses and relatives within two degrees of kinship
  • Clunky online interface
  • 48 hours wait for mileage transfers from AmEx with no option to hold award space

Excellent for

  • Business Class round trip from the US to Tokyo starts at 75,000 miles on ANA.
  • 88,000 miles for a round trip from the US to Europe in Business Class on Star Alliance.

Insider Tip

  • ANA follows the principles of some other programs from East Asia requiring redemptions only for family members, but also allowing waitlist and family accounts.
  • Building status in this program is only worth it if you are a Tokyo based frequent traveler and it works relatively well with the Homebase Stopover Strategy.
  • Family accounts may make it worthwhile when taking a vacation with the whole family and when no one in the family is a Star Alliance flyer. This way you can get an award after just one trip by pooling everyone’s miles.
  • You can book ANA one way through Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, and most Star Alliance partner program, but not through this program
  • The 48 hour transfer time is the biggest obstacle when transferring points as the award space may be gone by the time your miles land on the account. While award prices are appealing, proceed with caution.
