Main Frequent Flyers Programs Air New Zealand AirPoints

Air New Zealand AirPoints

Program overview

Airpoints is the loyalty program of Air New Zealand and a member of Star Alliance. Airpoints allow you to earn and redeem points for award flights. Earned points are called Airpoints Dollars. This is more of a rebate program than a frequent flyer program with frequent flyer program aspects retained only for partner airlines. The program is not attractive for US-based travelers, unless they make frequent trips to NZ (including their fifth freedom flight from LAX to London).

Pros

  • Prices are per segment
  • Very limited online functionality for award bookings

Insider Tip

  • The Airpoints program doesn't have award charts for Air New Zealand flights.
  • 1 Airpoints Dollar is equal to 1 New Zealand Dollar. Therefore, the cash price of the ticket determines how many Airpoints Dollars you need.
  • Air New Zealand offers excellent seats and service. This program is not their best feature. Their Business Class seats are among the longest in the industry. Premium Pacific Premium Economy is the best Premium Economy cabin in the world. Skycouch is also an innovative product. If you are looking to fly on Air New Zealand and you are a US based traveler, consider their many Star Alliance award partners or use the “book travel” function from Chase or AmEx.
