Renting a car in Europe is so convenient, allowing you to see the continent at your own pace. And while in the past you may have been able to get away without an International Driving Permit (IDP), as countries are opening back up to tourists post-covid, the rules may be changing. Many European countries are considering cracking down on American visitors, and will be checking to make sure they have an IDP before allowing them to drive European roads.
Going forward, it may well be a requirement to have one, even at the rental car desk upon your arrival in Europe. You may not be able to rent the car without one.
Obtaining one is simple. An IDP is just an additional document some European countries require as a supplement to your existing driver’s license. An IDP will satisfy the UN requirements for the format, size, and color of the document.
Have questions? We have answers! Here are the things you should know about getting your IDP.
As long as you have a current driver’s license (for at least 6 months), the only other items you will need is a completed International Driving Permit Application from the American Automobile Association (AAA), two original passport photos, and a small fee (usually about $20). Go to the AAA driving permit website for the form and follow all directions, or apply in person at your local AAA. If you apply in person, you will get your IDP immediately. If you are doing it online, the turnaround is typically about 2 weeks.
You can also obtain an IDP from the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA). These are generally the only two organizations in the U.S. that issue valid IDPs. Your IDP will be a plastic ID card, a leaflet, and also be in digital form on your Android or iPhone.
Note that you must be at least 18 years of age. Once you obtain your IDP, you are now good to drive in over 175 countries worldwide. Second, your new IDP will be translated into 70 languages, so when you need to present your IDP along with your driver’s license, it will be easily understood, even if you don’t speak the language yourself.
Think of it this way. Would you drive in the U.S. without your driver’s license or proof of insurance? Technically, you can drive without both, but what if you get pulled over for any reason? You wouldn’t want to be caught without either. The same is true when you as an American drive in Europe without an IDP. The fines can be quite costly. As we mentioned above, many European countries will begin to require proof of an IDP even before you leave the rental car desk!

So before getting on that plane to your amazing trip to Europe, get an IDP! And breathe easy knowing you can drive hassle and worry-free!
