The World’s Best Airline of 2022

2022 was a bumpy year for the airline industry. The summer season saw multiple flight delays and cancellations. Meanwhile in the U.S., it was found out that airline satisfaction was declining across the board. Additionally, airlines continued to grapple with billions of losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these challenges, the airline industry had something to celebrate.

In September 2022, Skytrax, the UK-based airline and airport review website unveiled its list of the best carriers in the world. The rankings were based on customer survey data gathered from September 2021 to August 2022. Over 350 airlines were included in the final results.

Qatar Airways was voted in as the best airline in the world. According to Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax, the Gulf state’s national carrier “was the largest airline to have flown consistently throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, with their network never falling below 30 destinations, and that determination has clearly been well recognised by customers with this award.

Aside from being crowned as the best airline, the carrier also bagged the following awards:

  • World’s Best Business Class
  • Best Business Class Airline Seat
  • Best Business Class Lounge Dining
  • Best Airline in the Middle East
  • Best Cabin Crew in the Middle East
  • Best Airline Cabin Cleanliness in the Middle East
  • Best Business Class Lounge in the Middle East
  • Best Business Class Onboard Catering in the Middle East

In response to getting the accolades mentioned above, Akbar Al Baker, Qatar Airways group’s top executive, thanked his employees for “their continued dedication and drive” and remarked that winning awards in the same year as the company’s 25th anniversary is “even more rewarding.”

Meanwhile, Singapore Airlines took the no. 2 spot followed by Emirates, ANA All Nippon Airways, Qantas Airways, and Japan Airlines. Turkish Airlines landed in 7th place, making it the top-rated European carrier in Skytrax’s list. Air France, Korean Air, and Swiss International Air Lines round out the top 10.
